The Planning Accreditation Board requires this information be posted for the Master of Urban Planning program.
Student Achievement
The Department of Urban & Regional Planning assesses student achievement through two distinct mechanisms:
1. Evaluation by internship supervisor
Every student who graduates with a MUP degree must complete a minimum of 180 hours of professional work experience. Internship supervisors evaluate the student on a wide variety of planning knowledge and skills, including teamwork, written and oral communication, ability to apply their knowledge to actual planning problems, and more.
2. Evaluation of the comprehensive planning report
Every student who graduates from our MUP program completes a comprehensive professional Planning Report. This independent research project is evaluated by department faculty using a common rubric. In order to pass, a Planning Report must demonstrate the student's ability to conceptualize problems from complex, real world situations, addressing questions that are research-worthy and meaningful to potential clients; their ability to collect, analyze, and synthesize information from multiple sources; and their ability to communicate effectively in writing and by expressing concepts in visual terms.

Additional Information on Student Mastery of Program Learning Outcomes
Every student who graduates from our MUP program completes the Capstone Studio in Community Planning and an individual Planning Report, as well as a minimum of 180 hours of supervised professional work experience. A summary of student mastery of the PLOs for students completing program requirements in Fall 2025 is provided in the tables below.
