Sometimes the systems in which they have operated have had inequalities embedded in the very structure of organizations, practices, or traditions. For this assignment, you are to select and learn more about a particular incident or event that had repercussions for advancing the cause in the struggle for equality or social justice for some people or group in America, past or present, in one of these following eight categories of cultural markers: religion, gender, ethnicity, race, class, sexual orientation, disability, age. For your focus, please pick an event or incident that is part of a larger process or struggle. Do not write a biographical sketch or prepare a general overview, and do not return to an incident you have adequately covered in an earlier class. Choose something fresh; make this a true learning experience for yourself. The following topics are off limits: Japanese Internment, Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, Kings I Have a Dream speech. After you have researched and learned more about the particular paradigm drama you select, your task is to answer the following questions on this report form. (First, get your topic selection choice directly approved by your instructor by Thursday, January 8.) When you have the form itself completed--feel free to download an electronic copy from my faculty web page-- be sure to print out a copy, write your name on the top stapled page, and submit it to your instructor on or before Monday, January 12. At that class meeting, you will be expected to give a short (8-10 minute) extemporaneous speech, summarizing for your classmates pertinent information about this incident or event and how it contributed to one groups particular pursuit of the American Dream. Write at least a paragraph or two response for each of the six questions below. 1. Which of the eight marker categories did you select for further research and study, and why? 2. How did you proceed in your researching to find the particular incident or event you ultimately selected? Why did you narrow in on that specific topic? How do you know the sources you consulted are reliable? (Summarize your research process. Also, include an appended list of Works Consulted as a bibliography following the MLA Style. For citation style questions, consult the OWL Purdue templates for the MLA Style Guide. The URL to begin this is HYPERLINK "https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/" https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/ ). 3. Summarize the particular incident or event you selected. (Include basic information on who, what, when, where, why, and how.) 4. Discuss some historical, political, social, or economic forces at work that helped provoke this incident or event. 5. Discuss ways that this incident or event influenced change toward social justice or equality if it occurred in the past. Discuss ways you envision it influencing change toward social justice or equality if it has only recently occurred. 6. Give specific evidence of how people from different cultural, racial, or ethnic groups worked together in some positive way leading up to this incident or event, during this incident or event, or as a result of it. The source of that specific evidence will of course be included in your bibliography.
