Connolly, Graduate Coordinator When do I have a Project Advisor? ANSWER: Once you submit the completed Application for an Advisor the Graduate Coordinator reviews and discusses your project with an appropriate faculty member. Once there is agreement about a good match, you will receive notice of the assigned faculty Project Advisor. You must have all incompletes cleared, all conditions met, and have reached Candidacy status. What is the role for the First Advisor? ANSWER: The First Advisor provides support and supervision of the students research project. Meetings are set with the student to review the proposal making any necessary suggestions for successful completion in a timely manner. The student prepares the IRB-HS application, the Advisor reviews and signs the application which the student then submits. A realistic time-line is developed if it is not already part of the students project proposal. Authorship agreements are discussed with both the First Advisor and Second Advisor following the guidelines in the course description for NURS 297. The Advisor reads, reviews and responds in a timely manner to the developing manuscript. In addition, the Advisor ensures that the scholarliness of the manuscript meets the final expected outcomes for the graduate program for critical thinking, communication, and therapeutic nursing interventions. The Advisor notifies the Graduate Coordinator regarding the students readiness for orals. Once the manuscript is approved and completed, the Advisors sign the Project Signature Form. What is the time commitment for the First Advisor? ANSWER: Students have two semesters of NURS 297 to complete their project. Generally, they are able to complete their work within the 2 semesters. There is more intense work getting the student ready for Human Subjects submission which should take place by the end of the first semester. More time is always needed towards the end of the semester for, review, editing, and revisions which are major tasks and time consuming. What is the time commitment for the Second Advisor? ANSWER: Generally, the Second Advisor will see the proposal prior to data collection then once the First Advisor is satisfied with the quality of the manuscript and it is near completion, the Second Advisor receives the manuscript for review. Generally, the time and work effort is far less for the Second Advisor; although the turn around time may put more stress on the Second Advisor. Students need to plan for enough time for reviews by both the First and Second Advisors. Do I need to meet with my Second Advisor? ANSWER: Generally, no unless your First Advisor specifically requests that you meet with the Second Advisor. What happens if the student is not finished within 2 semesters and has used the 3 units allocated for NURS 297 work? ANSWER: The student must enroll through the School of Nursing Special Sessions for NURS 298; units are allocated for the First and Second Advisors. While it is desirable if you can continue to work with the same Advisors, there is no guarantee that the same Advisors will be available beyond the two semesters. What is the role for the First Advisor and Second Advisor during the Oral examination? ANSWER: The First Advisor prepares the student for the presentation and prepares at least two substantive questions for the student. The Second Advisor needs to be present during the 20 minute student presentation and may pose the second question. How is authorship handled if the manuscript is published? . ANSWER: The student is the first author of all manuscripts published from the project, and the first advisor has the option to be a second author. The second advisor may be the third author as negotiated with the first advisor. Most journals are specifically requiring validation that all authors contributed significantly to the work. If that is not the case or if the team works differently then the Second Advisor should be acknowledged in the Authors Note on the manuscript. The authorship decision is made between the First and Second Advisors and is not the students decision. If the manuscript has not been accepted for publication within one year following completion of the work, the first advisor may submit the work for publication. The student remains as first author with the advisor as second author(NURS 297 Course Description). Other advisors or community consultants may share authorship as appropriate to the amount of time, effort, and expertise contributed to the project. Otherwise, advisors and community consultants may be appropriately acknowledged. When the article is published, please submit a copy to the Graduate Coordinator (NURS 297 Course Description 11/00).
