Purpose: To engage teachers in examining student work as a means for understanding student learning, and planning instruction to meet individual student learning needs. The Protocol engages teachers in examining the strengths and learning needs of an individual student. 1. The teacher sets the context (what were the circumstances under which the student did this work), but does not tell what the instructional objective was for any lesson. (2 minutes) Each person examines the student work silently, taking notes on what is revealed in the work about the student as a learner (what s/he knows and can do). Also, write down questions about the student work, the context of the assignments related to the work sample, or anything else you are curious about. (5 minutes) The group then discusses their notes out loud - what they see in the studentТs work. This is a time for observations about the work itself. Stay away from making inferences, evaluations, or any reference to lesson objectives. DonТt be uncomfortable with silences. The teacher should keep track of the comments people make on a piece of paper or chart paper. (5 minutes) 4. The group now discusses what this student is able to do and what the student seems to understand based on evidence in the work. At this point it is appropriate to make inferences, listen to otherТs interpretations, ask for evidence to support what others are saying. (5 minutes) 5. The presenting teacher now shares his/her insights into the student, his/her strengths and need areas, as well as condition of instruction or assignment expectations. In addition, the teacher can comment on anything surprising or unexpected that s/he heard during the group discussion.
