Place in a new binder (paper) with labeled dividers for each section. Objective: To create a collection of documents that demonstrates and explains your qualifications and professional attributes. It can be used to show a number of different skills, including, but not limited to, organization, written communication, leadership, and analytical and research skills. In addition, it can be used to set yourself apart, through a demonstration of not only your experiences and knowledge but also your creativity and individuality. Sections: Each section should be separate and labeled with dividers. 1. Title page with your name and email address 2. Table of contents 3. Professional philosophy (one section). 250-500 word essay Incorporate responses to questions provided in professional philosophy guidelines as well as class discussions. Must be well-written and free from spelling and grammar errors Must be logically organized with and introduction, body and conclusion 4. Downloaded copies of your transcripts. If this is your first semester at 91 print out your records that indicate so (one section). 5. Your resume (one section). Follow all guidelines outlined by the Career Center website. Use the resume you wrote during the resume lab. 6. And at least three (3) other sections with or without examples of your work. If you have a great idea for a section, but have no documentation at this point, create and label the section and describe what you might put in this section in the future. If you have documentation, place it in binder with titled dividers for review. You are encouraged to place examples of your work from classes this semester or previous semesters in some of sections. Design: Looks do matter. Since your profile is a collage of various pieces that may or may not have to do with one another there needs to be some sort of unifying theme. This is achieved through design. A professional portfolio wants to be professional and its design should be sleek and narrow. The 91 Career Center recommends four to eight pieces, which can be any of the following or any combination of the following (www.careercenter.sjsu.edu). These are just a few examples of what your sections could include. While you do not need to include all of the sections listed below, you need to select three that best suit your objective. **Samples of upper division coursework i.e. results of studies you conducted, examples of work in various software programs that you mastered, etc. These show your experience and ability despite a lack of on-the-job experience **Excerpts from papers/reports Written communication is very important to employers; the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of a topic and ability to research are other key reasons to include these types of documents. **Pictures of projects/group projects It is important to present tangible examples of your leadership, teamwork, organization, and presentation skills. **Awards, letters of recommendation, thank you letters, transcripts Including relevant feedback that attests to your capabilities can be very effective. Some students will have trouble limiting the number of pieces in their portfolio while others will struggle to find enough. The important thing to remember is that each piece must show high quality work. III.
