Each candidate [whether for the U.S. Congress or for State offices, such as Governor, Attorney General, Assembly etc.] represents a political party, was selected by members of their political party, through a primary election process, and therefore represents the beliefs and values and positions of their political party. Candidates often present themselves as simply individuals rather than party representatives. But anyone, if elected, will bring with them their partys philosophy [as reflected in its platform] along with a host of staff members and other appointees who also reflect their partys platform. For this reason, it is very important to read the Platforms of the political party of each candidate, not simply what they say on their own web-page, although this is also useful. Unfortunately few people take the time to do this. Yet these platforms are major documents, crafted after days and days of discussion among party representatives, and voted upon at party conventions. They contain the collective party views on key issues, articulate positions that will guide elected officials as they make policy, decide upon courses of action, craft laws, and come up with solutions to various problems or crises that arise. In essence, the political platform articulate the most significant mental products of the political microcultures we call Democrats or Republicans [or Greens, Libertarians, etc.]. The Assignment: Analyze the major political party platforms for their positions on sexuality-related issues For this assignment we will use the 2008 Democratic and Republic party platforms as our main source because these platforms are still in effect until the next Presidential election/national convention, guide the candidates for national office, and also are generally echoed at the state level [see for example, California Democratic and Republican Party Platforms and websites, cited below]. Search both the 2008 Democratic and Republican party national platforms for sexuality-related issues [broadly defined]. You can skim the entire document.or you can use key words, like sex, reproduction, abortion, contraception, marriage, family, woman prostitution, pornography, homosexual, rape to find relevant sections. Make sure you search thoroughly. The platforms are on the Course Website and also on-line [as downloadable PDF files] at: Republican: HYPERLINK "http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/" http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/ Democratic: HYPERLINK "http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=democratic+party+platform+2008&btnG=Search" http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=democratic+party+platform+2008&btnG=Search Optional: You can also look at other party platforms such as the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, the Peace and Freedom Party, the American Independent Party. For State Level platforms, see California Democratic and Republic Party Websites California Democratic Party [includes its own 2010 Platform] HYPERLINK "http://www.cadem.org/resources?id=0003" \t "_blank" http://www.cadem.org/resources?id=0003 California Republic Party website: [includes 2008 Republican platform] HYPERLINK "http://www.cagop.org/index.cfm/republican_party_platform.htm" http://www.cagop.org/index.cfm/republican_party_platform.htm Write-up: Follow This Format and Answer Each Question. Total Length: 1 page required. Optional: 1 additional page [counts towards WP2] Part I: Sexuality-Related Issues in the Democratic and Republican national party platforms [1/2-1 page] 1. Summarize briefly the sexuality-related issues that are mentioned in the Republican Party platform 2. Summarize briefly the sexuality-related issues that are mentioned in the Democratic Party platform 3. What sexuality-related issues that could be important tend to be ignored by both parties?
