Register to vote in California for national, state and local elections if: Youve never registered and are over 18, a U.S. citizen, a resident of California and NOT on parole for a felony conviction. You were registered but have changed addresses, changed names, or want to change political party. If you once registered but havent voted for the past 2-4 years, you may want to register. How to Register? You can obtain a Registration Form either on-line or at public offices [like post offices] or from someone who is doing registration and has forms [like me!]. How to register to vote on line [you print out the form and then mail it yourself]: HYPERLINK "http://www.sos.ca.gov" www.sos.ca.gov Other Sources of Forms: Get registration form from a library, city hall or post office. These forms are pre-paid and you fill them out and mail them in yourself. Be sure to read the form carefully. Some parts are confusing especially as to whether they are mandatory or optional. You can always call the County [or ask me] if you arent sure. WHICH COUNTY SHOULD I REGISTER IN? Each county has a separate registration office and forms with mailing address. HOWEVER, you can use any registration form from any county, mail it back to that county, and they will mail it to the appropriate county for your registration. STUDENTS WHOSE PERMANENT AND SCHOOL ADDRESS ARE DIFFERENT Your permanent address is the address on your drivers license. But if you are temporarily at a different address, at your college for example, you may have your ballot sent to a different address than your permanent address. See form. VOTING IN PERSON VS. BY MAIL You can choose either option and even if you choose by mail, you can vote in person at your precinct or the county registration office. Voting by mail starts 29 days before the election. LANGUAGES: you can choose English, Spanish or Chinese election materials ONCE YOUVE REGISTERED, YOU WILL RECEIVE A BALLOT AND OTHER ELECTION MATERIALS IN THE MAIL. These are very important and some, like the California Election ???, are incredibly useful for evaluating the State Propositions. If you are already registered, you should have already received them [at least in San Mateo County]. If you havent, you may want to contact your County Registration Office or re-register. FINDING YOUR POLLING PLACE LOCATION: look on-line or wait until you receive ballot telling you your polling place. USEFUL SOURCES OF INFORMATION FOR VOTING: Official site for the California Secretary of State: HYPERLINK "http://www.sos.ca.gov" www.sos.ca.gov California League of Women Voters [non-partisan]: HYPERLINK "http://www.smartvoter.org" www.smartvoter.org Website for busy & first time voters: HYPERLINK "http://www.easyvoter.org" www.easyvoter.org Official Voter Information Guide, California General Election. This is a thick pamphlet you will receive and is an excellent, non-partisan analysis of propositions, their impacts, and presents supporting and opposing arguments and organizations. Your Countys Election website Eg. San Mateo County, HYPERLINK "http://www.shapethefuture.org" www.shapethefuture.org National Political Party National and State Level Websites [they may also have a County level Website] California Political Party Websites; Democratic: www.cadem.org Republican: HYPERLINK "http://www.cagop.org" www.cagop.org Organizations that cover elections: non-partisan and partisan Newspapers & magazines, either Web Versions or in Print [also available in our library].especially substantive ones like NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, and lagging behind but still useful, the San Jose Chronicle and the old San Jose Mercury News. There are also websites identified with particular perspectives [e.g. Progressive sources: CommonDreams, The Nation, Huffington Post] or with particular issues [e.g. Reproductive rights, cf. Planned Parenthood] or interest groups [e.g. Emilys List, ] Public Radio Stations: KQED 88.5, KPFA 94.1, KALW 91.7, NPR Public TV Stations and Websites: KQED, KCSM, KTEH {San Jose], NPR. These often carry news reports, both from the U.S. [e.g. The News Hour] and from other countries. BBC News [British Broadcasting Corporation] is an excellent news source that puts U.S. news to shame! Cable: C-SPAN [several] OVERALL COMMENT: There is so much stuff out their now, both in print and especially on the web, that it is both exciting.and overwhelming. And it can be really difficult to differentiate non-partisan, reasonably accurate information from PR or political propaganda. Its important to know the perspective, background and credentials of the source of information. And to use critical thinking skills to evaluate what you encounter. Thats why General Studies courses ARE important!!!!!!! As for political adsthey are virtually USELESS and are designed for folks who know nothing!!! Or know a lotbecause then you can critically evaluate them, identify the buzz-words and catch the distortions or even outright lies!! For those inbetween, probably the most useful thing is WHO sponsored/paid for the ad. What IS useful is to find out except for knowing who PAID for the ad. But even the required list of organizations and sponsors can tell you little since some groups deliberately choose names that hide their positions or mislead you. Sad state of affairs for a democracy! No one so many people opt out!! BUTyou cant afford to. There are some excellent sources of information available once youve found them. Ill also be happy to answer questions, share information, suggest other sources. Mukhopadhyay, Voter Info 2010 Elections DATE \@ "M/d/yyyy" 10/3/2010 p.
