Bio
Teaching
Anne Marie joined the faculty at San José State University in 2002. Her teaching focuses
on environmental communication, rhetoric, and popular culture. She has developed and
taught more than 20 different courses at 91ÁÔÆæ, including an interdisciplinary course
on Global Climate Change, one of the first of its kind in the nation, which has been
taught continuously since 2007, and has a demonstrated impact on students’ personal
connections to climate change solutions in their daily life and professional careers.
Anne Marie received the College of Social Sciences’ Teaching Excellence Award in 2013 and was named 91ÁÔÆæâ€™s Outstanding Professor in 2015.
Scholarship
Anne Marie's scholarship explores environmental aesthetics and sense of place, as
well as issues of sustainability education, community engagement and integrative learning.
Her work examines the way environmental rhetoric shapes our community history and sense of place. Her most recent book, , focuses on the agricultural history of Silicon Valley. Her book, received the Christine Oravec Environmental Communication Research Award.
She has published more than 30 scholarly journal articles and book chapters, including research on climate literacy, gardening and food activism, and environmental messages in popular culture. She was named an 91ÁÔÆæ Salzburg Fellow and 91ÁÔÆæ University Scholar.
Academic Leadership
Anne Marie is an academic leader focused on student success, with an emphasis on equity
and inclusion in teaching, advising, and development and implementation of academic
programs. She currently serves as Dean for the College of Social Sciences at San José State. Prior to this she served as Associate Dean for Academics and Student
Success for the College of Social Sciences, Chair of the Department of Communication
Studies at San José State, chair of the University Sustainability Board, and on numerous
university committees focused on strategic planning.
