Safety Equipment

  • First Aid Kits: are required in locations that are accessible to lab/shop personnel. Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for making sure that their first aid kits are replenished when supplies are expired or depleted.     • Specialized First Aid Kits: Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for procuring and maintaining specialized first aid kits. The College Safety Team can consult about specialized first aid kits and will evaluate them during the regular lab/shop inspections. 
  • Fire Extinguishers, Safety Showers, Eyewashes, and Automated External Defibrillators: On 91ÁÔÆæ Main Campus, fire extinguishers, safety showers, eyewashes, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are maintained by 91ÁÔÆæ Environmental Health & Safety. Contact ehs@sjsu.edu to report any concerns regarding this safety equipment. 
    • Lab/shop supervisors may be required to procure specialized fire extinguishers such as Class D extinguishers for flammable metals. Once procured, university Environmental Health & Safety will coordinate annual maintenance and monthly inspections for specialized extinguishers. 
    • Both online and hands-on fire extinguisher training is available for labs/shops that conduct particularly hazardous work (such as handling pyrophoric materials) and for individuals that supervise work involving ignition sources (such as bunsen burners). Contact ehs@sjsu.edu for more information about appropriate fire extinguisher safety training. 
    • If portable eyewash stations are utilized by the lab/shop, then the units must be maintained by the lab/shop supervisor. These stations are not covered under the campus-standard for plumbed eyewash stations that are maintained by university Environmental Health & Safety. 
    • Field researchers can request ABC fire extinguishers from university Environmental Health & Safety. Field researchers are responsible to implement their own safety shower and eyewash solutions in the field (if needed).
  • Biosafety Cabinets: Annual biosafety cabinet certification is coordinated by the 91ÁÔÆæ Biosafety Officer (biosafety@sjsu.edu). Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for repair, decontamination, and recertification costs if needed. Lab/shop supervisors must inform the Biosafety Officer of any status change related to biosafety cabinets. Departments are responsible for biosafety cabinets in teaching labs. 
  • Ventilation Engineering Controls: 
    • Annual chemical fume hood, exhaust snorkel, dust collection systems, and paint booth certifications are completed by the College Safety Team with oversight from the 91ÁÔÆæ Chemical Hygiene Officer. 
    • Facilities, Development, & Operations is responsible for maintaining the utilities that support ventilation engineering controls such as airflow, plumbing, and electrical at state properties. 
    • The College Safety Team and college/department technical staff are responsible for unit maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, replacing filters, and fixing sashes.
  • Soldering
    • A fume extractor must be used when soldering. To request one, submit an .
    • Central Shops will replace filters on a schedule, but if your fume extractors experience heavy usage, it may need more frequent replacement. If you notice reduced suction, increased fan noise, or strong odors or an indicator light turns on, submit an .
  • Other Safety Equipment: Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for the maintenance of other safety equipment such as laser barriers, 3D printer enclosures, machine guards, and gloveboxes. Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for the documentation related to this safety equipment. The College Safety Team will ask about this safety equipment during lab/shop inspections and should be informed if there is any status change related to specialized safety equipment. 

Personal Protective Equipment: Central Shops provides personal protective equipment to lab/shop personnel  when needed for teaching or research. Submit an if you need personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, or lab/shop coats. You can also submit an to request help with a risk assessment to determine if personal protective equipment is required. Some specialized personal protective equipment such as laser safety glasses may need to be incorporated into equipment or project grant proposals.
